Okay, I have thoroughly looked into buying NT4 Server and W2K Server, but the price is way out of my budget.

Instead I went to Apache.org to pick up the latest Win32 version. I installed it, setup all the host details, etc, etc, in the httpd.conf file, and it serves pages wonderfully well.

The problem comes with ASP, it doesn't work! IE: The VB Script isn't executed, and DB connections are not setup.

Also, as a side issue, my server-side includes inside my ASP files don't work either! Now I have no navigation...

Can anyone point me in the right direction for some ASP & SSI binaries for Apache, bearing in mind that I am a serious newbie in Apache Web Server.

Thanks in advance.
ahdkaw
ahdkaw@sensibilium.com
<a href= you do visit my sites - be warned! Dear ahdkaw,

The only Apache compatible ASP engine I know of is made by Chile Soft. It is likely not 100% compatible and won't have most of the add on ActiveX controls that ship with IIS on W2K.

Good luck
-pete
Unfortunately Chili Softs ASP engine is not available for Windows98...

Thanks anyway...
ahdkaw
ahdkaw@sensibilium.com
<a href= you do visit my sites - be warned! You must be of a discordian nature...'

The only web server that supports ASP natively is IIS/PWS. As Pete mentioned, you'll need a third party addon for Unix. Besides Chilisoft, theres also HalcyonSoftware, but they probably cost as much as NT server.

I don't know what type of web application you have, or if you use components, but a short term fix might be to get an account at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> free, and they support ASP. However, you can't install components, and there's no support for global.asa, unless you upgrade to one of the non-free (but still very cheap, like $10.00 a month or something) options.

nick bulka

Dear ahdkaw,

Another option would be to move to Java and install the completely free JSWDK. Java Server Pages are very similar to ASP in concept and implementation.

I'm not sure if it supports Windows98 but that's a poor choice for an OS to run a production Web Server off of to begin with.

You might want to consider trying NT 4 Workstation or whatever the Win2K equivalent is. You might find PWS works much better on that OS. However it's still not a great choice for a production server environment. Also the Java Web Server does run on NT 4. Don't know about Win2K.

Good luck
-pete

All these replies are no good to me, as I need an immediate fix for this problem.

I know that using PWS for a production Intranet server is a poor choice, but when cash limits progress, I have to cobble something cheap together...

I am now running Apache on Windows 98 (which is a beta release, but at least it's free), I would rather find binaries for ASP and SSI, rather than learn even more stuff (I'm already learning ASP, VBA, VBScript, SSI's, CGI/Perl, plus all the Web Server administrative tools, learning Java Server Pages will probably burst my brain!).

I don't use ActiveX components (or anything else similar) in my Intranet Site, I only use ASP for Database Connections, and SSI's to include '.inc' files for Navigation panes.

I do use a few FPExtensions, but not enough to warrant buying NT4 or W2K Server. Even though as time goes by, I am becoming more and more convinced that I have little choice but to pay for W2K...

I would prefer free, but it's not looking to hopeful...

ahdkaw
ahdkaw@sensibilium.com
<a href= you do visit my sites - be warned! go to serverwatch.internet.com
it has reviews of all the web servers

GoAhead Web Server that supports asp
remember that it is free it is definately worth
the look

O'Reilly's WebSite Pro also supports asp but then
it has to be integrated with iis or pws or
microsoft peer services

PWS is available for free to download and i feel is the
best for asp as i run it of that

Halcyon Software has a iASP for windows as well to be
integerated with apache but i think you have to have jdk
installed on the server then
atleast on unix platform for iasp to function u need jdk

Hope this is atleast helpful

Unicorn11
webmaster@tripmedia.com

Hi there it all likeminded fellows!!!!!!

Thanks for the extra tips, but my problem will soon disappear thanks to my managers deciding to take my advice and upgrade the whole network from Win98 Client-Client 16bit Ethernet, to Small Business Server 2K Server-Client on 32bit Ethernet! Hooray! Money will be spent on a decent network at last!

Then all my problems will be solved in one fell swoop, IIS5 for my web server, Exchange Server for (at last) centralised contact database, and all those other handy progams SBS2K come with.

Thanks for all your help. :)
