I have a Sun Cobalt web server and after I installed an Apache update from Sun's site, the web server refuses to start. Here is the syntax of the error:

[root admin]# /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start
Setting up Web Service: Syntax error on line 47 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/mod_auth_pam.so into server: /etc/httpd/modules/m
od_auth_pam.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/usr/sbin/httpd

Could someone please tell me exactly how to resolve this(maybe by uninstalling the patch?). Thank you...

It's not a patch. Apache is trying to load a Pluggable Authentication Module library during its start. It can't find the library, so it barfs.

Are you using PAM for user authentication? Does the OS on the Cobalt even support PAM?

If the answer to either question is "no", I'd just comment out the references and go on.
