I've been trying to do this on a MAC too, but for familiarity sake I'll just ask about my XP version. As far as I can tell, I've done evrything right. phpinfo.php tells me things are running and phpMyadmin works fine. The problem occurs when I try to open local .php files with my browser. IE will try to download because it doesn't know what it is. When I try it from my MAC when networked it jumps to the Finder, opens the directory and highlights the file I'm trying to open. I'm using DWMX 2004 to create most of my files (at least the ones I'm having trouble opening locally). Is it the fault of"
A-Apache
B-PHP
C-DWMX2004
D-IO error (idiot operator)?

I'm sure someone else has an easier answer but this sounds like the same problems I had.
I ended up uninstalling both Apache & PHP then manually installed both apps.
First time thru I didn't manually delete the Apache directory in Program Files.
Finally, after several choice words, I reinstalled everything correctly & it's worked fine since.

Good Luck!

saltriver,

Take a look at your httpd.conf file. You should have a line like:
DirectoryIndex index.php index.html
