apache not using changes to mods

i didnt like the way apache did server generated directory indexes, so i tweaked the mod_autoindex.c file a little bit, to make it more bearable. my directory indexes look the same though. do i need to recompile apache to make it see the change? do i need to edit another file??

if i have to recompile, any info on how to do that would be appreciated. i dont know how to do it in windows.
