I'm a newbie to Apache (familiar with IIS) and I have a few questions. I have apache up and running. Is apache used for ftp sites as well?

Also I just installed it using an ubuntu server installation. Can someone explain the file layout to me? I'm assuming that on this default installation /var/ the directory that gets served?

And /etc/apache2 is where the configuration files are located? How do I tell which page will be the default page (and default directory)?

Thanks in advance.

No.

Maybe. The exact answer is that the content of the directory set in the [tt]DocumentRoot[/tt] directive in the server configuration file ( usually httpd.conf ) is served.

Probably, but is distribution specific. ( Never seen Ubuntu. )

Enumerate the possible files at the [tt]DirectoryIndex[/tt] directive.

Feherke.

jshurst,

Is apache used for ftp sites as well?
No, but your distro may include vsftp. Thats a pretty good ftp server

try /sbin/chkconfig --list to see if it is available and on or not
