I have been working for about ten hours now trying to set up multiple (2 for a start) virtual name hosts on a single computer using apache and bind (have not got past apache part yet. The furthest i have gotten is the default virtual host index page will display when typing in my ip or the But when i got that, doing the httpd -D DUMP_VHOSTS it listed my 2nd virtual host (not the one defined as defalt using the httpd server config tool. I read in a post on here that the server config tool does not work for these verions...is that true? I have just re loaded RH9 and got all the updates,(for the 5th time) and need to know if i should use the server config tool or not?

Don't use it. I never trust configuration to some application other than a text editor.

thanks Daniel

i am making progress...i think...following is output from httpd -D DUMP_VHOSTS

VirtualHost configuration:
wildcard NameVirtualHosts and _default_ servers:
*:* is a NameVirtualHost
default server waarc.com (/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:853)
port * namevhost waarc.com (/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:853)
port * namevhost waltwhit.com (/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:8
60)

i am not sure if these are errors or not? anyway i only see the first virtual host, the second one does not show up yet by using

It must have been a good morning :) after all these hours, everything seems to have fallen into place. I can get to both virtual webs now, only one domain is forwarded so not done testing 100%, but, i have seemed to also gotten bind to work, so, i have reguested one of the domain names waarc.com to be transfered to my dns server 66.43.222.151.
Hopefully, this will all work, then i can bug someone else when I try putting CGI on the apache :)
Thanks for your support Daniel

Not so lucky. I quess the basic question again now is do i use Domain Name Service to set up bind? I did, and thought it was correct, got the following response:

[66.43.222.151] returned an authoritative response in 63 ms: Answer records
name class type data time to live
waarc.com IN SOA server: waarc.com
email: root@localhost.waarc.com

86400s (1d)
waarc.com IN NS 66.43.222.151 86400s (1d)

when plugging in waarc.com for domain and 66.43.222.151 for server. I noticed the authority records are blank, but, i have filled in everything i can find in Domain Name Service and nothing puts anything in Authority records.

i am running a single linux redhat 9 with bind 9.2.1 (tried to upgrade to 9.2.2 but got a continuos no support packages) i am using for the secondary server. I have contacted my registor networksolutions and changed the info for primary and secondary server.

probably need to start a new thread in bind for this.
