[apache 2.0.45] Cant descripe because I'm lost.......

Sorry but I'm lost. I tried to install and run apache on my windows xp pro system but it wont work. I asked about all kind of things in forums all over the world but nobody seems to have the solution.

When I put

http://localhost

in my browser it starts looking for it but it wont open the apache welcome page. As soon as I stop the apache service my browser stops looking and the -cannot find server- page is there. It looks like there is some connection between those two but what kind....?? 127.0.0.1 wont work either.

MY QUESTION..:
Please threat me as someone that knows nothing and tell me how the install. Right from the beginning. What do I have to check before install and what do I put in by ServerName etc. during install. I also installed everything the way everyone on internet tells but maybe here are the real expert. Lets give it a try!

I HAVE THE FOLLOWING:
Win XP Pro (no SP1 installed)
Mcafee virusscanner
IE 6
Network between two computers and I'm the client
Shared internet connection (cable)
My full computername is sems_computer
I dont have a static IP because that is something the other computer is giving to me.

I ONLY WANT TO USE APACHE TO VIEW MY PAGE LOCAL. I DONT WANT OTHER PEOPLE TO VIEW MY THINGS WITH APACHE. JUST FOR CONTROLE MY PHP AND MYSQL THINGS.

Hope that someone have the solution.....

If you are on a different machine and using localhost of 127.0.0.1 as your URL, it can't work. Those always refer to the local machine that you are currently on.

Try pointing your browser to the IP address of the XP box running Apache.

well I have a small network. The server is a normal workstation connected directly by cable to internet and my own computer is the other computer in this small network and is therefore a client from the other. Because I shared internet with the build in tool from xp pro my IP address is assigned by the server computer in the network.

I want to run apache on my own computer.

Could somebody tell me from start what the right settings schould be?

By default, apache listens for all addresses on port 80 this would include the loop back device (127.0.0.1) so you should be fine there. A couple things to check in httpd.conf is:

1) ServerName - in your case, it should be localhost

2) DocumentRoot - it should be the same path as your html pages.

I just find out that I dont have any acces logs. Is that normal? Should you have acces logs as soon as you start apache or do you have only acces logs when you are looking at pages with apache?

I tried to install apache again after I installed IIS. Thats an advice someone gave me on an other forum. I will put here what he wrote...:

Just as a test, since you have Microsoft XP Pro, install IIS on your machine to see if you can do a localhost using IIS:

1). Click Start/Control Panel/ Add/Remove programs
2). Click on Add/Remove Windows Components
3). Click on the Checkbox for IIS
4). Reboot and try "

http://localhost/"

Me thinks that Microsoft, during a network setup, forgot to install something.

Wel after I installed this I got the localhost page indeed but now from my IIS server. I thought...ok lets install apache again but it wouldnt. He was saying so much that port 80 wasnt free anymore and also something about 127.0.0.1 . What is true because IIS is using port 80. But when I tried to install it again but now on port 8080 I got almost the same message.

Maybe here same ideas how I must proceed?

Well I did make the install now. I shut down IIS but it is still installed. But ok I can uninstall it. What would you recommend afterwards.....?

I would start from scratch. Uninstall Apache and IIS both, then reinstall Apache only.

I recommend that you find a likely-looking spot on your filesystem and make that your web directory. Write a short index.html file in that directory.

The reason why I would like the know what virtual host is is because when I understand it better I can find problems in the feature.
