Hi
I have one member of staff wishing to use his WinXP pro PC with a AOL silver broadband connection to access the Exchange 2003 Server that sits on our office network.
Having been succesful in setting up other members of staff, including myself with VPN's over the NTL broadband network I anticipated that because of AOL's propreitary bits and bobs this may not be quite as straightforward.
PPTP access on our firewall, a watchguard FBX700, has been successfully used for remote access by several users, none using AOL though, but whilst it is possible to create a PPTP session between the AOL client and the FBX700 the Outlook on the AOL client won't connect to the Exchange server, just says that the "Exchange Server is unavailable" although iot is configured correctly. It is also necessary to establish an AOL session to internet before any PPTP session on the client can be established.
On the working NTL clients I have had to manually configure both WINS and DNS to look at the server on the office network, but this doesn't seem to solve the lack of connectivity with the aol connection.
Initially I though that the FBX700might be blocking the connection, there does seem to be a lot of denied activity against spoofed addresses generated by AOL.
The obvious solution is to ditch AOL and go with NTL, but the member of staff is our Finance Director and he would squeal at the thought of increasing his monthly expenditure on internet access!
I have tried disabling the windows XP firewall on the client but that makes no odds either. Does anyone think that using MUVPN would have much effect?
