Hi All,
I am trying to spilt the DSL at my friends place but the problem is he has AOL with DSL provided by Verizon. The DSL modem is said to be an "always ready" modem, meaning when the connection is needed, or requested by the AOL user it will go through, otherwise it's inactive. I am using a linksys router, I have been very succesful in setting up similar networks but never with anything like this. Has anyone had any luck with anything like this? Also I was told by AOL Tech that the modem should be using a PPoE connection. Thanks for the help :)

Hi Madan,

You sound like you know what you're doing so this will be brief.

In a shared environment, the Linksys router actually takes care of maintaining the connection from the DSL modem to Verizon. So, you won't need to use the "dialing" software that Verizon provided any more. Go into the Linksys management console (using a web browser and the instructions for the router) and it should be plug and chug. If you still run into problems, go to the Linksys web site and download the latest firmware upgrade for the router -- they frequently update the system for new/different DSL provider configs.

After you've done this, the router itself will make sure the network is always connected to Verizon DSL, and each workstation will then have constant access as well.

Let us know if this isn't enough detail and we'll expand it for you.

Good luck...

Hey jpm121,

Thanks for the help. I read somewhere (no idea where) that I should clone the routers MAC with the DSL modems. I did that and I keep getting "Cannot connect with PPPoE server". Any idea what this means? Thanks for the help.

Hi all,

OK...after going crazy I finally figured it out. It was soo simple that I really was embarrassed. All I did was took the dsl and plugged it into the uplink port (NOT WAN) on the router and BAM, it all worked! Now all the computers can reach AOL through the dsl simultaneously. Though using IE can only be accomplished if you connect to AOL first. I am still looking for a way to keep the modem constantly on, so I don't have to go through AOL per-say. Thanks for all the help :)

I hae received the dsl kit and I am just waiting for the confirmation from Aol. How long does it take to get confirmation from aol.

MadanB's

The way you setup the router it is being used as a swtich. Are you not concerned about security, with no router to wall off the web from your LAN you are open to hackers.

Hi bradbury-9,

Nice to see concerns from the readers :) Well to elaborate, unless you are using NAT or a real firewall (CiscoPIX) you really aren't protected. Not to mention, if you really were going to be hacked, using NAT isn't going to stop jack! A common packet sniffer can be dled off any spot on the net and your IP can be watched. Not to mention most "h4x0r5" (hackers) use trojans to get into your network. AKA rendering your firewall useless! Because torjans punch a hole in your firewall from the inside out. Also, if your talking about the nifty little "built in" firewall's in routers, they are garbage. Unless you pay and get the reg key, in which case you have to constantly monitor the log, and accept and reject the ips you want. So to sum it up, I am worried that I am going to get hacked, but my handy dandy built in XPwall does well so far, and I am yet to be hacked! Not to mention, I am yet to see someone take down my PIX! Also remeber having a firewall doesn't help unless you constantly maintain it. Hope I helped :)

Hate to burst your bubble MadanB but the built in XP firewall (if that's what you're talking about) doesn't filter outbound traffic at all, thus making you susceptible to trojans. Invest in a real software firewall like zone alarm or something.

Good luck....

I have AOL's DSL. They use Verizon, which I do, too, for my home phone.
When I do a search or use a linking command, the AOL symbol in the upper right corner of my screen rotates twice and stops. The screen freezes.
Sometimes, but not always, the AOL symbol commences to rotate again. Thereafter, usually, the sought for screen appears.
Any suggestions?

I have AOL DSL and a Linksys BEFW11S4 v2 Router/WAP. I have figured out how to connect my network to the DSL line via the uplink port.

I was wondering if anyone figured out how to set it up through the WAN port?

Also, I want to know if anyone knows how to bypass AOL and just be constantly connected to the internet. I read some stuff about PPPoE but i did not find it necessary to configure it to get to the internet. I have also read some stuff about AOL having a proxy and it is built into the AOL software making it impossible to bypass the software. I noticed that if i run TRACERT.EXE it does go through a couple proxy servers first before getting to other servers.

On another note, Is there any way that I can make 1 computer on my network able to listen to tcp/ip ports (aka run a server)? I read something about "Forwarding" but will that only work if the DSL is pluged into the WAN port?

Any help is appreciated.

-Mike

Have any of you fine folks out there with AOL-DSL and a linksys router had any problems with communicating between them and your pc? Linksys says AOL should send me an update for Linksys Router. AOL says I have to purchase one of theres! Is this BS? or is it true? THANKS

I had the same problem with the Linksys and got a lot of back and forth between Aol and Linsys. Ended up, I had to return the router to Best Buy. For now, you do have to purchase the router from AOL, due to the AOL Firmware, which Linksys DOES NOT have the authority to distribute as of yet..... But, the router that AOL offered me - Cable/modem with 1 port - was for $119!! Outrageous !! I had purchased the linksys router with 4 ports for $59.00 at the store.

The only good news is that AOL said they should be receiving additional routers for sale, and, Linksys hopes to have the AOL Firmware available to them by end of August. So I am just waiting.....

i have aol dsl powered by sbc. i just found this website and have the same problem as coachrd and rio. I bought a linksys router at bestbuy and talked to their tech support. they said the router would not work without special aol firmware which they cannot provide. i guess the router goes back to the store tomorrow.

Hi All,

Like I said before;
"OK...after going crazy I finally figured it out. It was soo simple that I really was embarrassed. I check again and it will only work if you plug into the uplink port. I am at college and I have done this with 7 of my friends. I promise it works if you follow the simple steps of plugging it into the UPLINK port!!!! Hope I've helped.

If I understand correctly, the DSL modem is connected to the router via the uplink port, not the WAN port. The computers connected to the other LAN ports have connectivity too, right? If a wireless router was used, will the wireless part work also?

nuh uh....dsl modem should be connected to the router via the wan port...the uplink port on a linksys should only be used if port number one is empty....

now remember people....there is dsl provided by verizon...and there is aol dsl powered by verizon....the difference is which one is the isp....aol powered by verizon simply means its aol dsl who are leasing a dslam in the central office owned by verizon...and thats where the relationship ends...

if you have aol dialup and want to use it in conjunction with dsl...there is a way to set it up...its in the configuration of the Operating system as well as the aol software.

you should not be using verizon's connection software if you are on a router

wireless routers will work...

****if you have a linksys and dsl and want an always on connection and want to use aol browsers this is what you do

1. plug phone cord from telephone jack to modem, plug ethernet cable from modem to WAN port on Linksys Router, do not use the uplink port unless you are adding a hub, if you are adding a hub then make sure that port one is open

2. once your computers are hooked up to the router and you have the correct status indicator lights, (verizon dsl, westell modem solid green power ready and link) then open up Internet explorer on port number ones PC

3. DO NOT USE the Winpoet software unless you have not done your account setup yet and don't have a user id and password.

4. In IE address bar, type in 192.168.1.1 and hit enter
-- leave user name blank and use "admin" for the password
-- now you will be in the setup tab for the Linksys, make sure Host Name and Domain Name are blank
-- Set the Router to "Obtain an IP address Automatically" and select PPPOE and you should see a field to enter in your user id and password verizon has given you
-- click the bullet beside "keep my connection alive" and "30 seconds" and then click apply settings and continue
-- click on the status tab, if it shows you as connected then close IE and reopen...you should be online

5. set up AOL to work with this connection

-- go to the control panel and open up internet options and go to the connections tab. click on never dial a connection
-- open up AOL sign in screen and click on Setup, then you want to Add Location, the location you are adding is DSL Connection, This connection must connect thru "TCPIP ISP or LAN"
-- once you have entered in those settings and your router is configured you should be able to use AOL browser and/or IE

***if you have AOL DSL (powered by verizon) and it is not working with your linksys router, i am not sure about the whole firmware issue, however, check to make sure in either winipcfg or ipconfig /all that your NIC that the ethernet cable is plugged into shows a router assigned ip and not a NIC IP or it won't be able to access the router

hope this helps :) *ducks and hides* "don't shoot me i'm only the messenger!"
