I am using AOL DSL and having problem using VPN to access my work. The connection lasts only ~5minutes before I get disconnected from ISP. Does anyone have any suggestion on how I can use VPN from AOL DSL.

AOL tech support gave me advice to post question here rather then have them answer.

Thanks!!

I have an AOL account (ADSL) and log into my office network via VPN with no problems

Office server: win 2000
Home machine: xp
VPN Software: Windows xp (in control panel create new connection to VPN....)

Are you using third party software for this?

What you need to do is to connect to your AOL DSL with Windows Me for instance on one computer. By using ICS and that connection, let an XP or whatever computer get it's address DHCP from the ICS computer, it will be something like 192.168.0.2 while the main connected computer is 192.168.0.2 always. Use the 2nd computer, 192.168.0.2 to connect vpn to your office and it will work for as long as you want. AOL uses VPN and these little squirrely computers can only handle one VPN.

I am sure there are other ways. Like not using AOL DSL as one method. This problem ate my lunch for months until I figured it out with no help from AOL. Remember...set up ICS, use the main ICS connection to get to AOL, use ICS client to connect to work or whereever with VPN; otherwise, your connection will die within minutes.

Add to message about vpn and aol. I have only been able to get win me to work well with the aol dsl thing as the ICS computer using 192.168.0.1 address that is automatically assigned when you set up ics. XP would never work with AOL DSL. You can use XP as your client to connect to your work or whatever. Remember to connect using one (ME in my case) computer to AOL, then use another (with client ICS connection to first compauter) to set the VPN to work. No use trying to get VPN to connect using the same computer with AOL DSL. I have wasted months trying. On ME the ICS thing is built in and easy to set up. You may be able to get it set up on others but for some reason XP will not work.

With AOL vs 6 and now 7 I found that I couldn't use VPN to my workplace with AOL. AOL were very unhelpful and basically just said it wouldn't work though it did work under AOL 4. I just got back from the USA and with XP pro just tried it again and to my surprise it did work. I contacted AOL and they said it shouldn't. I want to upgrade to Broadband in the UK but AOL won't confirm that the VPN will work!. Has anyone experience of using VPN on Broadband in the UK with AOL?
Thanks
