I run exchange 2000, and when AOL decided to lock down there spam filters I was put on AOLS dialup ip list because my server is running off a cable modem. Now I want to relay messages through my ISPs email server so I can finally send aol users email again. The only problem is I don't know how to do that. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction. I am not a spammer I would just like to respond to my customers.

If you want to relay off your ISP's email server (as you stated) you would need to contact your ISP and convince them to allow you to do that. They would need to turn on relaying on their system for you. Good luck!

How in exchange 2000 do you actually turn off the virtual smtp server service and only allow email to be sent through the relay and still be allowed to recieve interoffice email. any ideas? i am facing the same issue

Mike,
I believe what you're looking for is in Exchange Admin, go to Admin Groups, <servername>, Protocols, SMTP, Virtual Server, Properties, Delivery, Advanced Delivery, and specify a SmartHost. That server that you specify needs to be set up to allow relaying from your Exchange server.

Indeed the correct way is to use a smarthost as stevethegeek suggested

This means when an internal user sends a mail, rather than go straight out via your exchange server it is simply replayed to the ISP's SMTP and sent from there

Assuming your IP has permission to relay through your ISPs server(im sure it will do if its your isps :) using a smarthost is what you need

Remember to use square brackets as it wouldnt work for me otherwise!
