Hello.
I just tested my website on AOL 8.0, and the Flash contents does not appear. Are there any special proceedures for AOL browser Flash optimization/modification? Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks.

My website is:

Ivan1,

I'm not 100% sure, but I think AOL 8 is based on Netscape rather than IE. Flash writes the code into the web page to redirect a "Flashless" IE browser to the macromedia site... a netscape one won't automatically.

Just go to the macromedia site and download the latest version of the player using your AOL 8 ... the site will automatically recognise the browser and download the correct version....
...then you should see you Flash page!

This is just a guess.... could it be the version of Flash?

THe site works fine on my IE6 and Netscape6

I'm sure that the more knowledgeable members of the forum will solve this for you!

Good luck m8

Aol uses ie as a default. Your site works fine in aol 9.0. My guess would be the player needed to be updated.

Just re-download the flash player and install. Sometimes it gets buggy.

Looking at the code of your site does not show any reason other then I can find your object tag anywhere. Seems you are loading everything in I frames?

Very buggy html layout. Also all those keywords and phrases you took all that time to write down are doing no good because you have no keyword text, links, titles, etc to back them up. Google which is one of the #1 ranked searches right now completely ignores them.

I would re-think the layout, try a more traditional approach to the html.

Sorry to get off the topic, but I saw all of those keywords and they threw me for a loop.

But like I said, all works fine in aol 9.0.

Good luck,

Thank you very much for your observations.
I got two questions for you:
1). What is the best way to go about testing sites in AOL without signing up for the service?
2). How do you go about indexing sites done completely in Flash since they do not contain any keyword text?
Thanks again.
Ivan

ivan,

haven't a clue about testing for AOL... maybe you got a friend who uses it?? Someone who could be 'bribed' with a few beers?? lol

I didn't know that google ignored header meta tags (although I think there is a limit on the number of characters that you can use for these meta tags... and I reckon you've exceeded them!)

I was led to believe that google was into "Link Popularity" - in other words, the more links from other sites that you have to your site, the higher ranked it will be.

Exactly....Link Popularity....is the key.

However you can build up to atleast a page rank of 4 or 5 without any incoming links, for the most part. Then all your inbound links help light the pathway to the first page of the serp's.

As far as indexing a flash site, you can't. I thought once I had this great way of cheating with flash movies, what I would do is take all of the copy in my flash movie and place it in a <no frames tag. Which for a while worked. However google caught on to what was going on somehow, the website completely dissapeared from the serp's, never to return.

Remember promaintenance4u old?

Anyways I would break the site up and build it out in html. Make the areas where your copy will be html. Use tables for the rest and drop your flash pieces in like that. Once you do it a couple times it's like putting together a puzzle.

As far as testing for aol, from my experience, if it works in ie, it works in aol.

One new issue with 9.0 is once installed it automatically has a pop up locker on. Sites who use popups for marketing, things like that, will have to re-think for future projects. This poses a real problem. The bad part about it for internet marketers is most users think that the popup blocker is a good thing, people who make money from selling them, well...some re-organizing of thoughts are in order.

I myself included........
