Friends are running AOL 7.0 on a Gateway 500S with Windows xp Home Edition, Norton Antivirus 2002 and Zone Alarm Pro. Recently they have been unable to start AOL or retrieve email. NAV has the latest virus definitions and ZL explicitly permits AOL an internet connection. Task Manager does not register AOL as running. The internet connection is via a Comcast cable modem. Downloaded and tried upgrading to AOL 8.0 which midpoint through the process decided that we terminated the install. All other software applications and hardware function normally. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

1.un-install all versions of aol.

2.do a ctrl+alt+del and end task all programs EXPECT explore,systray and rundll(if u have it in the list).

3.install aol 7.0.

4.if step 3 does not work go to step1 and check if u have a partial AOL installed ,if yes uninstall it.

5.with the aol cd inside the CD ROM,open the CD ROM from my computer icon on desktop by right clicking the "try aol" icon and right click again on the setup.exe file and send to->desktop(create shortcut)->u will have a shortcut icon on u r desktop.

6.restart computer and while the computer is starting press F8 button to go to safe mode->double click the shortcut icon that u had created in step 5 and install AOL.

7.if all else fails....check u r computer memory...it is very low...so please UPGRADE!!

Dear Ehari - Thanks for your response. The solution we arrived at (in desperation) after multiple attempts at uninstalling and then reinstalling the software was the following;
a)uninstall software,
b)delete all folders and files related to the software,
c)empty Recycle Bin,
d)defrag hard drive,
e)reboot,
f)install software.

It's been working properly. - Gibber
