Anyway to trick sites that PC in US?

Many, many sites enable people in the US to watch tv shows online, but since I'm in Canada, they don't allow it. What in particular let's a site know that I'm not phyiscally in the US? Is there a way around it?

Connect through a proxy located in US.

There are public proxies you could use, but 1) I am not sure you can watch online television through proxy; 2) I am sure most of them are also blocked.
