We use the above printers in our office (connected to mainly Windows 2000 pro, but also a few Windows XP Pro) and I would like to know if any performance gains can be had from adding memory to them. The HP4 was made in 1994, the HP6's were made in 96 or 97, and the HP5 probably in the same period.
I recently encountered an error message "W1 Image Adapt" on the HP4, which I understand was caused by a "complex graphics print file". Is the memory required for these printers still available? Does HP's website list the exact type of memory requirements and memory capacity? How do I check the actual onboard memory?
Thanks for your help.

W1 is a memory issue...the printer will attempt to print at a lower resolution. Add memory to resolve. Memory does not speed up a printer, but will help in the above cases or if 20 memory errors received. Again, usually when printing graphics. If you print mainly text, you don't need more memory. Memory sticks are C2063A/64A/65A/66A...1, 2, 4, 8 MB in that order. Doubtful HP has any, but if they do it will be costly. Do a seach, you'll probably find used memory around.

The LJ4s (4/4M/4 Plus) used parity 72pin SIMMs, similar to what you used to install in your Pentiums, except more expensive. Even more so now that 72pin SIMMs are all but nonproduced. Still, the LJ4 is a tank (mine's from 1992 and still going strong after replacing the output rollers) and if you can find the memory, it would most likely be worth it in your case.
Also, the existing amount of memory can be gleaned from the test page, printed from the Test Menu -> Self Test menu item.

Whatever you do, don't buy memory from HP! It costs a fortune! Go to Crucial ( there you can tell it your make/model of printer and it will supply you with the correct memory. Just bought some 6P memory from them a few weeks ago
