Anyone know of any product or program out there that does for Linux (Ubuntu in my case) what Windows Volume Shadow Copy service does for windows?

Here's how Microsoft defines the thing...

Can't say that I've seen something recently that speaks to this functionality.

Fundamentally, taking snapshots of a running system or failing to shutdown a database (for example) as part of a backup methodology seems risky. I'm surprised Microsoft was able to implement such a thing - if it works.

My guess is that this is equivalent to RAID10, or is it RAID 01, or 15... too tired... Anyhow, you should be able to write in a mirrored fashion across disks, perhaps in triplicate. Then you can break off one of the trio and back that up with confidence. Expensive PITA, but it's a first thought. Someone with more experience might have a better solution under linux.
