We started using the XServe Raid boxes before XSAN went beta and then "live"

The only real choice for us (mixed Mac & PC environment) at the time was sanmp (
I'd like to know if anyone else has an environment similar to ours?

I'm looking to do some automated backup stuff for our video editors (FCP5) and am also about to embark on Qmaster.

Anyone?

We are not using a SAN at this time for our FCP editors. We currently have 13 eidt bays using local fiewire storage for our projects... What a pain.

I have been looking into Xsan and Command Soft's "FibreJet" product. I hadn't bothered with SanMP as I wasn't real happy with the findings a few years ago.
How many users are you using with SanMP and how much XRAID storage are you using? Are you using the Apple FibreChannel cards? What FC Switch are you using?

Sorry for all the questions. I was planning on attaching an Xserve to the FC switch and using Atempo Time Navigator and an LTO to back up the SAN.

Let me know what you think.

I just stick an XServe RAID on the back of an XServe G5. Gives me 7TB for minimal money. Back it up with a pair of Certance LTO-3 Ultrium libraries and repeat until you have enough storage space. Oh and use an ATTO dual channel PCI Express Celerity fibre card (can't recall model OTH) - nicely quick.

The local firewire storage isn't super-terrible. It's kind of the evolution of a SAN / shared workspace environment. It's what we did before we went SAN.

In reality, we went SAN because we needed to do workflow - prepoduction, editing and postproduction. The SAN allowed us to do that with ease.

sanMP works well for us because have a mixed environment. We are a very large Church with heavy media usage. We have 8 FCP editors and two PC based editors that we haven't migrated over yet - 1 AVID and 1 844x.

We have 2 XServe Raid chassis. 1 with 7 x 250 gig drives and 7 x 400 gig drives. The 2nd chassis has 7 x 500 gig drives. So, that's roughly 7.5 TB of storage.

For MACs, we're using the Apple FC cards. For PCs we're using a QLogic card of somesort.

We use a QLogic SANBOX 5200 Fibre Switch.

For backups, I am backing up like Zelandakh. I use a Certance LTO-3 autoloader.

Are either of you doing any render-farm technology like QMaster?

Now we know what Zel does for fun in his spare time!
