J100 Series phones are not directly supported by V7 and below. You'll have to administer them as 9611SIP (or 9611SIPCC for Call Center on the J169 and J179). It seems you can set the the J100s to H.323 but I haven't done that.
There are unique settings in the 46xxsettings.txt file just for J100 series phones. Do a good stare-and-compare between the latest version from Avaya and what is currently on your Utility/HTTP Server to make keep everything enabled when you upload the new file.
And get familiar with System Manager and Session Manager for managing your SIP Endpoints.
The J169 phone completely locks up (phone screen frozen) and requires a reboot when you are using hot desking. Also, if you have any wired headsets then you should probably wait until the next release because the buzzing noise will cause your users to hate you.
If you are not on 8, don't bother with the J series. I've got a J179 on my desk and I want my 1608 back. Although some Avaya documentation says the J series is supported on 7.1, there are a lot of "gotchas." For instance, once you program a button, you can't re-use it. You can delete it, but you cannot program another button in it's place without completely removing the user from SMGR and re-building it. Audio quality is fantastic, but administration is a nightmare.
I wish we could stick with the 9600 series with H.323--they just work. Unfortunately "the powers that be" are hellbent on all SIP and are having us remove 9600/1600 phones from desks in favor of Equinox.
