We currently have an old Cisco Pix that we use for the common endpoint for about 30+ remote IPSec VPN's. We have just converted to a new MPLS network and we must implement this feature soon. It appears the obvious choice is to purchase a new Cisco ASA5510 but we Linux folk understand the upfront as well as annual "per user" licenses.

I know that some shops use a purpose built Linux box as their primary router which leads me to the question posed in the subject.

If you use or know of someone who uses such a device I would greatly appreciate any information that anyone may be able to provide on this topic.

Thank you and I look forward to your replies.

You should take a strong look at OpenVPN. It could provide you with a very, and very free, VPN solution.

It handles point-to-point and well as a pool of road warrior/dynamic connections.

OpenVPN could be a service as either a dedicated machine or in tandem with your firewall services.
