Well I am a memeber of OSX@oSXlist.com and I posted this problem there , so that anyone else who has the same problem will know what works this is what Judi Sohn suggested.

First, make sure your iMac is properly configured for iDisk. System Preferences... -> Internet -> .Mac tab. Make sure your .Mac username and password are entered there. If so, click on the iDisk tab and make sure the computer can update your disk space.

If that works, and Go -> iDisk doesn't work then Go -> Connect to Server... In the window, type idisk.mac.com and then you will get a box. Make sure "registered user" is selected (should be the only choice) and then type in your .Mac username and password. The next window should be the name of your iDisk, select that and it should mount.

that is the bit that worked for me and I now have it on my dsektop again [rofl]
thanks once again to JUDI

Ah! it seemed like it was a temporary fix. once my modem disconnected the iDisk icon disappeared and I had to go through the above process again.
But before I had it on the desktop all the time, I know I couldnt access it while I was not on line but at least I could see it to connect once I was. Or is the state now the normal one?? [sadeyes]
Any ideas gratefully received
Cheers
