Anyone know why I can't change a WINXP computer from workgroup and place it in a domain ? I created a computer account in AD on the WIN2K server, I can ping the WINXP from the server, and I'm logged on as administrator on the WINXP machine. I have two other WINXP machines already in the domain (they were like this when I began administration on this network), why I can't place a new WINXP machine on this network is a mystery to me. Any help is appreciated - thanks.

As Microsoft says so often, "This feature is by design."

XP, more than Win2k and certainly more than NT clients enforces the Domain Policy settings of the Domain, not the local machine.

As far as the Win2k Domain PC is concerned and XP is concerned jointly, you as the local machine Adminstor have absolutely no rights to join the Domain. This requires a credentialed Domain Adminstor Group member, and a password.

I know this is not true for a Win2k client. But this is what the future holds. Just add the local user with Domain Administor credentials and the XP profile will remember the next time and not ask.
