I inherited a network with a several old HP printers attached to old Jetdirects. (Jetdirect 170X)

Recently I bought an HP Laserjet 2300L and replace an old printer with it. Now i get several strange errors. First I got some PCL6 error, so I changed to the PCL5e drivers. Now i get some error where in certain programs it will cut a line off at the bottom of the page.

So I have a question. Is there a possibility this Jetdirect is too old for the printer? I can't flash the firmware cause this model Jetdirect doesn't have any memory and it seems HP stopped supporting them long ago. Would I be smart to upgrade?

Or is it more likely something else. I have noticed the Windows NT machines have more issues with the printer than the Win2k ones, but that doesn't fix every problem, though.

Internal and External JetDirects mostly work real well.
I have some old one's that have worked flawlessly for years.
Can you temporarily connect the printer directly to pararallel port of the suspect computer, and test there ?

I can't see that "in certain programs it will cut a line off at the bottom of the page" is anything whatsoever to do with JetDirect (which is merely the means of transport).

It is much more likely that you have a problem with either the application, or the print driver you are using.

One or the other of these is perhaps assuming a different paper size, or a different 'unprintable area' at the bottom of the page.

If you are the "lucky" owner of a JetDirect 170x version with a FW of X.07.03 or above, you should be able to configure it via your browser on it´s IP address. Does the programs that causes any of these problem run off a DOS box ? If so you might need to change the printers pagesetting with a PJL command telling it how many lines per page should be printed. The LJ 2300L is probably set to a default pagelength of 60 lines, but can easily be set to fx. 80.
