We have a pretty vast network and out of 330 users, I have a handful (literally 3-5 users) in our Accounting Dept. who are experiencing issues opening spreadsheets. The problem started 2 weeks ago. We did some research and found that some of the new automated upgrades could have disturbed a patch that was established for 2003/2007 to open spreadsheets authored in a 95 or V5 of Excel. What we have done?

A) Although we frown on saving things to C:, we have had them copy the spreadsheets from a network server to their C: and open.

B) Moved the spreadsheets to another server - same issue.

C) Had the user log in at a different machine.

D) Reimaged their machines

E) Upgraded them from Office 2003 - Office 2007

F) Plugged their machine directly into the switch in the server room (acct just happens to be that close to the server room for security)

G) Another user with similar permissions can see, open, save, and email spreadsheet to the afflicted person. Once opened one time, the afflicted person can open on the server.

We think now that this is some kind of permissions issue but don't honestly know where to look because the persons affected have full permission to the Server, Drive, and Folder where their spreadsheets are stored.

Anyone else out there having a similar issue? Or a fix?

I usually have arguments with Excel. No issues.

txgeekgirl1, you have described everything you have done to resolve the rpoblem, except for exactly what the problem is. Would you please tell us exactly what it is that Excel refuses to do?

Oh - Open the Spreadsheet for the user from the original location. And it isn't all spreadsheets - but they can't be tied to one subfolder or even one user.

User A and all others in the dept can open a spreadhseet that Users B & C can't open. But on another spreadsheet in the same folder, everyone but User A can open it.

We set permissions at the root folder and then subfolder levels and these particular users, because of job title, have open permissions.

We ran into a problem with some excel spreadsheets some time ago. Seems they were being opened in Compatibility mode, this was causing the problem.

Assuming its similar, open the document and save in .XLSX format. Close and reopen.
The problem came from a 2003 excel version opening up in 2007. 2007 defaults to compatibility mode.

Hope this helps you.

Nope - not the same because the problem started in Office 2003. We only upgraded their Office yesterday.

txgeekgirl1, you must get some sort of error trying to open the Workbook.

The first error is one that says the spreadsheet cannot be accessed. This may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

I have read through this thread a few times now. It can't be permission issue; it can't be Excel issue (needing to re-register); it can't be user profile; it can't be network issues since works for one and not another

so....... sounds to me like temp file problem. Are the temp files being deleted once a user is done. The user may have all other rights, but not delete rights. Please check that they have delete rights as well. Check server for orphaned temp files. Most likely you will find many.

WOW! We never even thought of that and you are right.... On this server, that is only a Domain Admin right from an Admin / RDP connection.
