i'm editing with microsoft paint and it keep on changing my gif and jpg files. I've w2k and looking for a freeware program

i got hold of photosuite 3. its ok but when the photos are gif and if i fix the picture - then i save it it smears the picture. I don't like this. i find tiff is ok and doesn't smear much. anybody know about this

It's not .gif that's "smearing" the picture, it's the compression of the picture. Check your "save as" properties, and reduce compression. A .tiff is far too large for internet use. Try .jpg or .gif and save with a resolution of around 75dpi, it's enough for internet stuff. You can also reduce most pictures to 256 color and not lose much quality, depending on what you're going to do with the picture. Cheers,

A very nice, complete, and FREE paint prog is Ultimate paint from Megalux. They also have a shareware version with more features for not much money ($30?). The site is: - go to the downloads section and scroll down for the freeware version.

ok on the compression bit... mgi photosuite does not show that option..

Different formats have different compression. If your program doesn't have an option for compression anywhere (totally unheard of, I thought ALL good graphics progs had compression adjustments), try saving it in .gif and .jpg format. Check the final picture quality against the final file size. A compromise may have to be reached.
If you find the quality is just what you want, but filesize is too large, open the picture in IrFanView (or any other good graphics prog) and click Save As, then the "Options" button. You'll get a sliding bar to determine quality/filesize ratio. Try it in different places, until you have the quality you want at the filesize you like.
I can post examples on the web for you to peruse if you like. Cheers,
Jim
