We use Exchange 2000 and have Symantec Backup Exec 11d. There is a former employee that destroyed all his Outlook PST files before leaving us and now I am trying to restore his mailbox. I've got a backup of the entire Exchange store on tape. I think I know the answer here but is there any way for me to restore an individual mailbox from that or am I out of luck?

yeah, we weren't doing the granular restores at that time which is my issue. and you got it... he was archiving his e-mails into PST files. he took all the PST files with him when he left. so i think i'm out of luck.

If he was archiving to PST to a hard drive that you still have access to, the data may be recoverable via a data recovery specialist - you will have to get a quote and weigh that against the perceived value of the data.

i checked the hard drive after he gave it back to me and there were no PST files. nothing there... i'm sure he removed them. plus, i've since reformatted that laptop for another user anyways.

To recover what you do have, you'll need to restore the backup to a 2nd server that you setup with Exchange. Then you can use exmerge to recover at least what was in his mailbox, but that's all you'll get.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!
