any way to make a complete/perfect copy of any hard drive?firmware ect

i have a KHD-C710 Kenwood Music Keg. it is a device that stores mp3 on a hard drive that you play in your car.
the part with the hard drive they call a dms. it is nothing more than a toshiba laptop harddrive. but they add something to the hd that keeps the main unit from playing mp3s from any other hd in your car. i want to know how they do this because they charge so much for these special hard drives. i want to buy my own cheaper hard drive and use it.
what can they be doing to their hard drive that makes it so special??

well if the clue is *bless*, the only thing I have seen, and used, that uses anything called bless is blesstivo for hacking the tivo. and you have to use a program called gunlock to unlock and lock the drive. Sometimes drives for specific things are locked and new drives won't work if left unlocked.

As for copying a drive, I use dd command in linux, search the tivo forums for a bootable floppy with linux and the dd command, read the instructions carefully because if hooked up wrong you can copy over the existing drive with the blank drive,loosing everything.

thanks for the advice it really makes sence. the clue *bless* may have been the final clue needed
never hack tivo dont have one but i hacked my and many other xboxes sounds all very similar.

xbox is the same way
the xbox also needs the harddrive to be locked with the right code. each xbox has its own number based on an internal serial number. this same serial number will keep you banned from xbox live when tring to connect to xbox live with a mod chip on
each system needs the drive to be lock if you want it to work with out a mod chip. you can not take one xbox box drive to a diff xbox with out unlocking the one hard drive and relocking it back with the right code.
