Any way to add a message-id in Outlook?

Outlook 2003 does not include a message-id with outgoing emails. Apparently, Exchange will add them, but unless you're using Exchange, those emails go out without a message-id.

The problem with THAT is that many recipients' filters block out emails that don't have a message-id... so we send emails without being sure if the recipient got them or not.

Does anybody know a way to add message-ids in Outlook? (And I THINK I've determined that digital signatures don't do it.)

all emails recieve message id when they leave the server accross the internet, whether they are from Outlook, Opera, Outlook Express, no matter they get message ids.

same goes for internet based emails such as Yahoo & Hotmail.

Uh, thanks for your reply, but I don't think you're correct. I can send an email to myself using Outlook, then go to View > Options, and look at the internet header, and there is no message-id there. If I do the same thing with Mozilla, there is a message-id.

Anybody else got any ideas?

I am sorry, but eyec is correct, there is always a Mesage-ID in a header, unless you use some specific software to strip it but Outlook by default will add an ID.

are you sending yourself the email from behind the exchange server, i.e. in-house or to an external (outside your exchange server) email address?

i did read the link you posted but would like to see if it is possibly restricted to intranet versus internet email messages.

It's not an MS bug, you're mail client isn't meant to add the message-id header, your mail server should.

No exchange server here... Just Outlook 2003 (with service packs)... so I guess you would call that an outside email address.

Marcs41,

Since we don't have Exchange Server, what do you make of the fact that if I send an email to myself in Outlook and open it in Outlook, I DON'T have a message-ID... but if I send an email using Mozilla, and open it in Outlook I DO have a message-id?

Well, I do not know what to make from it, because I tried the exact same thing, with and without an Exchange server.
Every single mail has a message-id.

When I referred to 'mail server' this does NOT imply an Exchange Server!

Marcs41,

Thanks for your input so far... I'm not sure what to make of it either... I've tried to get some help from the people who host our email server, and they don't know either. Plus it's a little hard to make a convincing argument to them if I get a message-id using Mozilla, but not using Outlook...

In your test, were you using Outlook? And how did you verify that it had a message id? The way I did it was to do a right-mouse click on the message in my in-box and choose Options. In the box with the Internet Header info, there is no message-id... (but when I do that with Mozilla, there is).

Granted, we could install Exchange or use Mozilla, but, of course, each of those has its own ramifications... I'm really surprised that this has become an issue for us... and others, witness the link I posted above.

Thanks for your help so far. If you, or others, have any insight, it would be greatly appreciated.

if you are not on an exchange server and you are using outlook thru your isp and sending yourself an email then call your isp and ask them if a looping email gets a message id, because that is what you are doing - looping.

other than that i must say that if your isp says yes, then i am without a clue as to why you are getting no message id.

I used Outlook 2003, to replicate your problem.
I sent a msg through my Exchange Server to 2 off-site accounts.
I did the same sending directly trough my ISP to 2 off-site accounts.

They all had a message-id in it.
Meanwhile, while this puzzled me, I had a friend do the same, with identical results.

Like eyec pointed out, it should not really matter, but if your ISP is doing such a thing, just send a message to a friend, Hotmail or other mailservice, as long as it is off-site.

Well, I don't know what to say... other that I sent an email to my ISP using Outlook, and it had no messge-id... I sent one using webmail, and it did have a message-id...

It sure would appear that it is something with my Outlook, but I've yet to figure out what it is...

Thanks for your help so far...

Well, I finally changed my ISP and started getting Message-IDs... perhaps Outlook doesn't provide them, but the ISP does...

There you go!
Like I said in one of the earlier posts:
It's not an MS bug, you're mail client isn't meant to add the message-id header, your mail server should.

Apparently, your previous ISP did not respect the 'rules' too much ...
