Hello,

Does anyone know if viruses are capable of deleting E-mails from the Inbox, Deleted Items, etc... folders of Outlook Express? Particularly, the hard hitting viruses that are out there right now (netsky, Mydoom, etc....). A user of ours had several MyDoom viruses caught in his inbox one day by his antivirus software (which is up-to-date), and at about the same time he said he got an E-mail he couldn't delete, then all of a sudden his inbox was cleaned out as well as the deleted items. The sent items folder does not appear to have been touched. I researched the info on MyDoom and a few of the other big viruses out right now, but none of them make mention to deleting E-mails. This may be a corrupt .mbx file, but I'm not sure.

Thanks,

Shawn

Mydoom.F does delete certain files:
"If the drive is a hard drive, remote drive, or RAM drive, the worm randomly deletes the files it finds with the following probability:

.mdb - 98%
.doc - 40%
.xls - 60%
.sav - 95%
.jpg - 8%
.avi - 10%
.bmp - 15%"

Technically, these aren't email files, but there was another variant just discovered and the writeup is forthcoming, so stay tuned.
