We are moving from 8.5 to XI (SQL). I know the orginal 8.5 reports can be pulled up into XI. Is there any glitches I should know about? Will they all work as they were designed or do I have to change anything.

There has been a message in XI upon refreshing an 8.5 report that states:

"The database file 'a_field_name' has changed. Proceeding to fix up the report!"

If you hit OK another message titled "verifying database" pops up and states:

"The database is now up to date."

Is this normal? What is it doing?

Many thanks in advance for help.

Why do you say "XI (SQL)"?

The database type (SQL) is irrelevant to Crystal. Did you upgrade a software package to SQL as well as updating crystal versions?

Sorry, I was just indicating that we had an SQL database.
Upgrade is to Crystal Reports only. From 8.5 to XI.

OK well in that case, the messages you are getting is just crystal verifying the database. I don't know why this is happening, but once you save all the new reports in crystal XI, this should not happen anymore.

Try Database > Verify Database for the 8.5 version. You may find that there are some extra fields or changed fields. Crystal will run OK with out-of-date table definitions, but it is best to be up-to-date.

On the more general point, when we went from 8.5 to 10, almost everything was fine, but one report with a complex set of tables failed to work. It was really a fiddle in 8.5 that we had got away with.

If you've been suppressing subreports, this is now much easier, though the old method will work.

Likewise with stored procedures, if you use them. These can be mixed with regular tables.

Note that anything converted to Crystal 11 cannot be saved back as 8.5. A basic change from Crystal 9, Unicode is used. So make a backup for everything in 8.5, if you've not done that already.

Thanks for the info. We are still in the learning curve. We have made a separate directory for the XI reports with copies of all the 8.5 reports there. As we open and save in there they will then be XI. The original 8.5's will still be in the 8.5 directory.

We have found out that if you have both versions loaded the file will always open in XI if you don't already have a version open. We just have to be careful to know which we version we are in before we save.

One important note. If you inserted any SQL coding into Show SQL Query in Crystal 8.5, you will not be able to modify it in Crystal XI.
