Any suggestions for component distribution (BOE11), in a cluster? 2

Hey guys,

I'm trying to set up a BOE11 Cluster. I'm at point now where I have two options (as I see it). I can either...

A.) Install the web components and the file repository on the same machine.

or

B.) Install the web components on one machine and the file repository on another.

But I can't decide which is the better option.

If I install them both on the same machine, then I only ever need to be worried if either that machine goes down or everything but that machine goes down (in other words if that machine and one other machine is running, everything is kosher).

On the other hand, if both the web components and the file repository are on the same machine, then that machine will have to handle both web transactions and all of the file i/o. This seems like a pretty heavy load.

Any advice? Or how would you guys distribute all the necessary components across multiple machines?

TX Knight ;-)

How many servers are you licensed for..?

Are you looking for performance improvement or fail-over in case of hardware failure...?

Which BOE-XI componenets are you using (Crystal Reports, WebIntelligence, OLAP Intelligence, etc), and with what kind of user load...?

I believe setting up to system for optimal performance would be the best route.

And the BOE-XI components we are currently planning on are...
CMS
Web Intelligence
Input/Output Repository
Job Servers for Programs
Job Servers for Reports
Cache Server
Application Server
Page Server

We do not currently have plans to implement OLAP Intelligence or any other component.

We will have a couple thousand registered users, but no more than 50 concurrent users logged in the cluster at a given time. On average, we will have any where from 5 to 15 reports being processed at a given time.

Thanks,
TX Knight ;-)

Hmmm... Really wish we could edit these posts. Some quick clarifications.

Application Server = Report Application Server

And we will have 6 machines in this cluster.

OK, so all content is ONLY in CRYSTAL REPORTS format...?

So is your BOE-XI license for 50 concurrent users or for 6 processors...?

Or is your license by named user?

Will your users need to access the web applications from the Internet or are they all on an internal intranet?

If you're opening it up to be available on the Internet, I highly recommend having a separate web server. We are configured with at 2-server cluster for the CMS, job servers, report servers, etc. and a separate web server with the web component adapter in our DMZ. It is working well for us.

A computer only does what you actually told it to do - not what you thought you told it to do.

Almost all content will be Crystal Reports Format (with exception to those reports that are occasionally scheduled as another file format).

We are licensed based on concurrent users.

All users will be accessing from an internal intranet.

Thanks for the help so far guys,
TX Knight ;-)

Your rpt files will eventually be processed by the Page/Cache & RAS servers, so it makes sense to put them on the same server for best performance. It makes no sense to put them on the web server, because they aren't being processed there.
