Hey,
I was wondering if there are any set minimums or maximums for memory size that's true for every PC. I'm not just concerned about memory, but also the caches, flash memory, video memory, etc. If there are any set mins/maxs please let me know! Thanks and have a good day,
Dan :uD

Minimum and Maximum memories?? There is no straight answer to it.. for it is totally hardware/software specific.
For example the servers I work on have anywhere from 64 Megabytes to 64 TeraBytes of memory.
The normal limiting factors are the maximum Virtual memory size of the system ..for example if it's a 32 bit int U can have only upto 4GB of memory.
The minimum requirement is dictated by how much memory UR OS needs ...over that it depends on U ... how fast do U want Ur programs to run.

For an normal Intel-PC it will be limited by the slots available on the motherboard multiplied by the Maximum sized SIMM it can support.
AS for Minimum it is one SIMM of the least memory size ur chipset requires.

Adios
amit
crazy_indian@mailcity.com

to bug is human to debug devine

there is no real such thing as setting max or min, maybe we could help you if you let us know why you wanted to know, then we could help you achieve what you are trying to figure out.
Karl
kb244@kb244.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
I think what Zimbu was looking for was what do YOU SET memory usage to on computers...here's what I do:
My computer has 128 megs of ram so I set Windows swap to use a 140 meg swap file. The max and min are set thus, which is supposed to eliminate the size of the file being readjusted by the OS. On our systems with 32 megs I usually set them at 1 1/2 times that (48 megs) + at least 12 megs for the registry...making the setting 60 megs.
After the settings and reboot have been done, look up the swap file in Explorer and make sure you understood the setting and did it right: sometimes you don't get the results you expected and the file is way small. These are only preliminary settings and you really need to pay attention to how fast or slow the computer is running and what you're doing to affect that by running different software.
I've had systems with Windows managing its own memory eating up so much (needlessly) that straighten up and run better after using these settings.
John Payne
cadman2
