Hi,

I'm considering purchasing a copy of preowned Office 2003 on eBay. It would be a copy that has been completely uninstalled from the eBay seller's computer (or whatever computer it had been installed on).

I was wondering if anyone has had experience installing and activating a previously-owned copy of Office 2003 (or a similar version). I've read that re-activating the software involves phoning Microsoft, and I read somewhere that Microsoft "might" charge an additional fee.

Any insights into this process, especially a description of the steps involved and any caveats or pitfalls, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Bill

If it works the same as Windows, then I think all you would need to do is make sure that the seller has deactivated or un-registered it with Microsoft via telephone. At least I was told before that Windows could be done that way.

Also, it will depend whether it's OEM or Retail. Retail is much easier to move amongst pcs, and I don't think there would be any issues, other than possibly dialing Microsoft via phone.

I have no personal experience with this but you should have no problem if the software is genuine (and resellable) and the EULA allows for it to be run on your computer.

There is no deactivation process so you will almost certainly have to ring Microsoft but there should be no charge and I am told that it is a straightforward process.

Ensuring you are buying valid software on ebay is, however, difficult. Very little of what is sold there is legal for the buyer to use.

Enjoy,
Tony

Yeah, do beware any eBay listings. [wink]

Thanks for the helpful info. "Caveat emptor," as always.
