I am looking for a photo printer for $250 or less. A Best Buy guy told me Lexmark is my best bet. Can anyone give me some recommendations or observations; what's good and what's bad?
For a photo printer I would shy away from Lexmark. I have had several, and they are reliable workhorses. They also suck up the ink, and don't give the best photo quality for prints.
I would personally recommend the best Epson or Canon that you could afford, even if you could find one of the previous years models (unused, of course) on sale.
Canon i950 is great. You can read reviews online. It prints great looking photos. I don't believe BestBuy sells this model, but you can get it online or at CompUSA
My small office uses The Epson 780 and 785 color printers. These are 4 color printers (CMYK) rather than RGB. Both are excellent printers when it comes to printing photos and can do edge-to-edge printing.
We do a lot of brochure designing and we use these printers for our mock-ups and small run jobs where fine detail and rich color is needed.
As with any color printer, the ink can be the most expensive part of the deal but there a lot of places online to buy good quality cartriges at as much as 25% of the brand name cartridges.
Also, if you want really good looking prints, DO NOT SKIMP on the paper!!! All photo quality paper is not created equal. We've tried them all and found that with these printers, Kodak Premium paper produces the best prints.
There's always a better way. The fun is trying to find it!
