We are in the process of changing our internal Microsoft network drastically, and want to avoid any potential major problems ahead of time.
Currently, we have a single subnet on our local network, provided by a D-Link DI-640 router:
192.168.0.*
We are in the process of changing to a Cisco 2811 Router and a gigabit backbone, at which point we will end up with at least three subnets:
192.168.0.* will be reserved for network devices (switches, etc)
192.168.1.* will be reserved for servers
192.168.2.* will be reserved for workstations
All our machines (2-3 servers, 20-30 workstations) are on a workgroup, not a domain, thus we have no domain controllers. Most, if not all, of our internal machines use DHCP provided by our router.
My question is this...When we change to using multiple subnets, will we run into any problems? Will we need to designate one of our servers as a WINS server? I don't really know much about WINS, are there any pitfalls to watch out for?
I'd appreciate any advice you can provide, thanks for taking the time to read this!
