Well, they have been out a few months now, I've always used macs and I am starting up a new art dept. soon.
I will have to buy new hardware. our basic software is Adobe CS2. I am looking at Mac Quadpro's, does anyone have any feedback on Macs intel and photoshop for example. Either my timing or Macs timing is creating quite a dilemafor me!
I would really appreciate anything you might have to say.
Thanks GAry

let's talk about it here.

Adobe was very busy with aquiring macromedia and they forget to optimalise their code for OSX. 5his means that macs have lost theisn speed edge on PC's.

Now that the acquisition of Macromedia is done they are cocentrating on rewriting their basic code for macs and Intel chips. Next year endmay or start of june the transition will be completed and macs will have a better coded Adobe version for OSX and Intelchips.

So if you buy a new Macpro now, until next year their will be an emulation program (Rosetta) that takes care of running your Adobe apps ,as good as the existing code allows. But it is an emulation so it will be slower. CS3 will be written for OSX and the Intelchips.

So if you can postpone your new comps it until the arrival of CS3 you will have a better working system, beca&use the Adobe code, the intelchip and its evolutions will make a better buy. Buying now a Macpro won't take a noticable benefit of the power of the Intelchip.

A prog and the computer that it is running have to be a package. If the prog doesn't take advantage of the possibilities of the OS your progs and of course your workflow won't benefit.

Hope to have helped you

The reason for the absence of a Universal Binary version of Photoshop is not that Adobe was distracted by the Macromedia acquisition. (Unless of course you are an Adobe employee that can write with some authority on the matter.)

The thread at adobeforums.com indicates mixed stories of improved performance over G5 so the assumption that running in Rosetta emulation is slower is not entirely correct.

If you have an Apple retail store near you, try experimenting with a demo model running Photoshop to see if the performance is suitable.

jimoblak,

I don't have to go to a store I have one under my fingers, and 2 other macs in the house, and I must say that if you just do normal things, the slowdown doesn't show.

But when you do more complex things, things begin to slowdown. And the version on my PC is doing the same things much faster. The models are all about the same, with ram and mghz.

The suggestion of testing Photoshop at an Apple Store was intended for the OP. This is a matter of 'your mileage may vary' and the only real test outside of seeking forum input is to actually try a machine.
