any issues with 2 instances of SQL on commserver

Hi,
Initially I had MS SQL on our commserver which also hosted the Sharepoint services database.
after reading some posts regarding performance, I have setup another instance of SQL and moved Sharepoint database to the 2nd instance.

My concerns are:
1. Do you see any concerns with this setup or 2 instances of SQL ?
2. Do 2 instances of SQL require 2 SQL iData licences ?
3. Seems like a waste of SQL if only one (commvault) database sits on it ?

How long have you been using this setup?
I'd be very interested to know how well Galaxy has been performing with the CS on the same server as your SSD.

Having your CS and SharePoint db on the same server is not the official recommended architecture...check with support as to problems that could arise.

It's not really a waste of SQL as it's licensed to be dedicated to CommVault and you aren't supposed to use it for anything else.

You don't need 2 x SQL iDAs as there is no need to backup SQL through an iDA on the CS....thats what the ER backup (or should I say DR as it is now) is for.

I had that setup for a short while. Since the server wasn't in production I didn't really notice any issues.

However, sharepoint services site was a bit slugish in performance and I believe sharepoint a very resource hungry application too.

I've been adviced that sharepoint may cause corruptions to the CS database and hopefully now with two seperate instances of SQL that is not an issue anymore.

I wouldn't have anything else on the commserver. The commserver can eat-up a lot of resource. Also, you need to think about updates. What if you update CommVault and it updates your SQL installation. It could have corrupt your sharepoint databases. Just some thing to think about.

I believe there are some EULA issues when using the CV install of SQL for anything but Galaxy. Other than that kevinDT brings up a good point - you do not want to have two mission critical apps on the same machine.
