Any help, to make this Lightening, and sliding effect?

Hey i still cannot figure out how to do something like this:

Click on "projects" then click on "the west of Ireland"
Now you get one picture on the other side, and in the middle you get one row of thumbnails. As you can see, when you put you cursor on the row of thumbnails, the row starts to sliding, and there is some illumination effect.
What i would like to make is this Sliding effect, and lightening effect.
any idea? thank you in advance.

I managed to get something like that by running my images through the user filter in the Gimp, so that the white became transparent. (Alpha : 256-r) Saved them as PNG files, imported them into Flash, and put buttons behind them that faded from dark to light when rolled over.
