I'm new to unix. What text editors would you recommend. I know a lot of people swear by VI, and some prefer emacs, but I'm wondering what other editors are out there.

kdevelop
eclipse
scite
anjuta

Hope that helps a little... SCiTe is my favorite when it comes to a gui, though console-based, 'nano' is my favorite for its simplicity.

-No tiengo caballero, but I have un briquet.

On console, I use Midnight-Commander (mcedit) too.
On X11 I prefer scite (a lot of syntax is supported).
If appropriate, I use sed, the famouse stream-editor.

Eclipse is a IDE and much too big to call it an editor, while it contains an editor.

If you are a consultant or contractor, or have any inclination to be one in the future, you *MUST* learn VI, since it may be the only editor available when you go to a client site. If you're an employee at a company, you have the luxury of using a third-party editor.

I use vile. It has the finger-feel of VI and the macro language of microEMACS.
