This is the strangest problem I have ever seen. Server information below:
SERVER OS: Windows 2000 Server SP4 + All Updates
Server Hardware: Dual PIII, 1.5GB RAM, 5 HD's
Server Function: DNS Server, Web Server, Email Server
Issue: Any file named "dns.exe" on the server becomes invisible to windows explorer and every other program but the initial startup of the "DNS Server". This is causing several problems.
1. The MMC Snap-in for DNS won't work
2. I can uninstall the DNS service, but I can't reinstall the service because as soon as it reinstalls the DNS.exe file becomes invisible.
3. I have a hotfix from microsoft to fix the MMC issue, but it won't install because as soon as it extracts the dns.exe file disappears
4. Most importantly the DNS server does not function correctly.
5. You cannot view the DNS.exe file in a command window even if you use the /A flags
6. But if you try to copy or rename a file to dns.exe in a directory with a file that contains a dns.exe file already, it won't let you because a file already exists with that name.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. This is wierd.
