Just got a little test server the other day, an IBM X206, just wondering if anyone can recommend a reasonable anti-virus software for it - obviously, dont want to pay loads, as its just for testing purposes.

Nod32

Why choose this software? It seems expensive, £140 odd for a five license package - I only need it for the server. Or am I totally looking at the wrong thing?

When you buy AV for a server there is always an assumption by anti virus vendors that you are looking to cover clients as well so they sell in packages for client PCs that might be logging into the server.

I just had a quick look and bitdefender is about £170 for a 10 user pack and I suspect that Mcafee and Symantec will only sell their server AV products in packs as well.

I recommend NOD32 because of the great reviews it gets,
it's easy to setup and maintain
it's resource utilisation is very very low
it's fast
and most importantly it catches the little nasties when they try to infect the computers I look after
and it keeps gett 100% in the virus bulletin tests

I was pointed to this webpage by another user once, and it seems to give a pretty educated look:

Gives you the chance to read reviews, and choose what you feel is best for you.

Just been thinking a bit, and, is it even worth getting an AV, as long as your firewall is tight, surely you should be fine? Or is it too risky, even for testing purposes?

Definetly get something in place. Wayyy to risky, just cause you have your firewall setup for specific ports (80, 25, 21) it doesn't mean that no one will download, ftp, or email something that doesn't have malicious programs.

Doesnt AVG complain though if you try to install on Server 2003 - or does it install anyway?
