I'm setting up Small Business Server 2003 at the moment. Despite regular Server 2003 installations and upgrades, it's the first time I've set the latest SBS up.

I'm considering using Symantec Antivirus SBE v9.0 to protect the server and 10 workstations, also for the first time.

Does anyone know how good spam filtering is on the Symantec product or should I consider adding something like GFI Mail Essentials for Exchange Server which I've used a few times when it has got out of hand.

Also is anyone aware of any compatability issues between the Symantec Antivirus SBE and the Exchange Server 2003 on SBS?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Mike

No experience with Symantec's SBE.

I've had great success with Trend's CSM for Small Business and Sophos' small business suites.

Spam handlers in both those products work well.

its symantec av9 multi tier you require for sbs not sbe

These are the product i use and i've installed 8 SBS2003's.

A couple of things to watch out for:
How will you recieve emails? directly using SMTP or the pop3 connector?

If using SMTP, get symantec 9.x small business multi tier and GFI mail essentials 10
Works a treat!

If using pop3 connector, get symantec 9.x small business server and workstation (NOT multi tier) as the SMTP scanner is pretty redundant. The realtime protection picks up viral emails while being downloaded by the pop3 connector. GFI also has a pop3 connector that lets you download emails as frequently as you want, not every 15 minutes with the SBS pop3 connector, and the GFI connector allows complete anti spam protection.

You will have to get an 11 user version of symantec as the server counts as 1. if you only get a 10 user boxed version you get nasty error messages and alerts etc after a while.

If you need any more info, please feel free to get in touch.

Paul

We use Symantec 9.0, but not their spam filter. We decided on 3rd party filtering. All of our mail goes through and gets scanned by Postini. Not expensive either.
