Norton Antivirus found a virus in incoming e-mail and apparently "locked" the in.mbx file. When Eudora (6.1) starts it immediately gives error #13 stating that the file is "read only" or "locked". I then get the unhandled exception message and Eudora shuts down. OS is XP Pro. I need access to this mbx but can't figure out how to repair it. Any assistance greatly appreciated!

This sounds odd. Eudora stores attachments in the ATTACH folder under the main folder by default.

Suggest you try the following:
1) Have Norton do a full scan of the machine and clean anything it finds. Try reloading Eudora at this stage.

2) If there's still a problem, rename in.toc to in.old and then reload Eudora. This will force Eudora to regenerate the table of contents for the inbox.

3) As a last resort, the .mbx files are plain text; you can load them into Notepad and view the contents and extract the message contents.

Had Eudora rebuild the TOC but then when opening the "in.mbx" it reported that the file was either "read only" or "locked"...and I got the unhandled exception again. All I had to do was uncheck the "read only" in the file properties...and now all is well!
