I have a retired co-worker who is being plagued by the Antiviurs 2009 Pro trojan. She has run the following to get rid of the virus but has yet to kill it:

Avast
Adaware
Spybot Search & Destroy
SpyHunter
A Squared Free

She wants to find something that works for free. Is there anything out there that works for free? She is afraid that since she may have to pay more than once to kill it completely.

Thanks,

Daniel

Depending upon what's also got in there, she might do better scanning the hard drive from another PC, with say, AVG (free). The trouble with XP Antivirus 2008 and 2009 is that once activated they open the doors to all sorts of other nasties...

That Malwarebytes really works... Ive had to run it a few computers.

Here's a list of what seems to be working for me on all the modern really nasty malware variants, such as this one:
[ul][li]AVG 8.0 Free - Antivirus/Antispwyare - install, protect, scan[/li]
[li]MalwareBytes AntiMalware - Antimalware - Install/Scan - may do some protection in free version, I forget.[/li]
[li]DrWeb CureIt - Stand alone scanner - no installation. Also try the live CD for it - one guy in an adjacent thread was able to get a machine to where he could use the other tools after running that one.[/li]
[li]SuperAntiSpyware - Install, Protect (a little on free version), scan[/li]
[li]Windows Defender - Install, protect, scan[/li]
[li]SpywareBlaster - Install, protect (no scanning)[/li]
[li]Online Armor - Install, Protect - is a Firewall and malware blocker sort of. It protects against applications communicating to/from your computer, but it also will stop malware from running on your machine at all - I've been VERY impressed with it of late.[/li][/ul]

You can get AVG, Windows Defender, SpywareBlaster all from - or other sources. FileHippo is just my current favorite.

You can get MalwareBytes AntiMalware, SuperAntispyware, DrWeb CureIt, Online Armor from
One other scanner that comes in handy is MWAV Antivirus. It will scan for free, but you then have to manually remove the infections yourself. I've used it before successfully just scanning for free, then manually removing threats - only after running other apps, so fewer to deal with.

Online Armor prevented the Antivirus 360 malware from being loaded at all onto one computer. I was VERY pleased with that!

I've removed the one you're talking about previously with a combination of AVG and Windows Defender on one machine. On another machine, it took a combination of AVG and MalwareBytes mainly, and I think SuperAntiSpyware removed some as well.

Give some of it a try, and post back with your results.

Thanks all! It has taken my friend a while to respond to the situation on her computer as she moves bewteen Florida and her home in Ohio. She claims that she was able to get rid of the pop ups when using IE, but that she has yet to get rid of the Anti Virus 2009 program itself. I told her it was probably because she paid for it, and she will have to use the Add/Remove programs in Control Panels to get rid of it completely. She has yet to respond as to the outcome.

Please do keep us updated whenever you find out whether she got rid of it.

I'd highly suggest running the system scans, especially these:
AntiMalware
SuperAntiSpyware
DrWeb CureIt

AFTER the uninstall, in case that changes anything.
