I am looking for a stand alone anti virus scanner/checker for exchange ... Does anyone have any ideas? .. I am currently running Symantec Anti Virus Corporate for the rest of my network....

...Thx

What do you understand undr "stand alone"?

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, expect random guesses or no replies at all.

By "stand alone" I am refering to a virus checker that runs on a seperate desktop pc running Windows XP ... Such as the Gwava software for Novell GroupWise ...

Then there is NO WAY you could ever do a check on Exchange.

In that case, can you recommend an anti virus software that runs on the server ... One that checks every incomming and outgoing message ...

I use Trend Micro's ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange 2000 and 2003. Very happy with the product.

Any major vendor will do, but, and I know I will step on some toes here, stay clear from Symantec Norton.

Antigen is a good solution - you then have a choice of different engines.

Anthony,

I'd like to give my opinion on the question asked.

Configuring Antivirus & Exchange gives you 2 options:
a) scan the SMTP (incoming/outgoing Internet email)
b) scan Exchange "database" email

The difference lies where the email is scanned.

Solution A scans ONLY messaging sent using SMTP, coming from the internet and going out to the internet. External destined mail... This requires a so called "mail relay" functionality on a separate server. Possible products are GFI Mail Essentials, TrendMicro SMB Messaging Suite, or appliance boxes like MailSweeper, Barracuda,...

Solution B is a software to be installed on the Exchange server itself, which than scans all your incoming and outgoing email, also "internal network emails" sent among Exchange users.
All popular antivirus products provide an "Exchange-aware" antivirus solution (McAfee Groupshield, Symantec AV for Exchange, TrendMicro Scanmail for Exchange,...)

In larger environments, we try configuring both solutions, using different "brands" of Antivirus products (eg. TrendMicro as Mail Relay and Groupshield on the Exchange server itself)

Does this makes it more clear?

Regards,

Peter

Peter ... Thanks for the break down ... Now, I have a better understanding of how the system works ..

I like your idea of running two seperate solutions, I prefer to have extra security.
