Anti-Virus Software DAT file updates?

I run a small business mainly cleaning up home PC users machines; removing all sorts of Spyware and updating their Anti-Virus software packages. I deal mostly with Norton and Mcfee as they are the most widely recognized and installed software.

My question is: are both of these packages becoming harder and harder to update using the manual method? I have detected a slow movement to discourage and force the hand of the home user to buy the annual automated update service. A lot of my customers are on a limited budget and find this unacceptable and would rather run the risk of infection than spend the additional money. I would appreciate some observations and comments on the above.

This is really based on my personal bias(es), but I'd suggest you might want to broaden your horizons and look into some other very good AV products, like Grisoft, TrendMicro, and Panda.
