Hello, Can any of you techs recommend an anti-virus program that I can use on an Aloha fileserver? I have Norton 2005 on it now, but the autoprotect feature on this software slows my machine down like crazy, and I also suspect it as the culprit in some recent EDC DSL transaction problems. Im looking for something that doesn't eat up a ton of memory but is effective in virus prevention. Is there an AV program designed specifically for POS systems?

Thanks,

-JAG

Vexira Antivirus by Central Command is my favorite antivirus product to use with Aloha. -Whether you are doing a single or 500+ sites, Vexira worked excellent on our Aloha installations nationwide. Excellent support, and you can define the product or a custom installation build easily.

Kaspersky works well, but we did have to spend more time configuring Kaspersky at first than we did with Vexira. The central management console is very similar to Vexira. Lots of options and modules.

Officescan by Trend Micro and Symantec were always a pain for us due to our WAN structure, and the way their management console wants to connect.

MegaByte - Thanks for posting that. Do you run Vexira on the FOH Terms as-well or just on the BOH machines?

Thanks!

On a similar another note, how does everyone lock down their BOH machines? I already use a restricted user login on the BOH machines but do you do anything (or use any third party software) that limits what users can do when they are on the system, i.e control programs they can access, web browsing (less of an issue we use netscreen boxes to filter), system changes they can still make?

Thanks!

We only run antivirus on the BOH. Since the FOH terminals are built and locked down to be an appliance only, the only source for viruses would be from the BOH. -Plus I use dual network cards on the BOH (One nic is for the WAN connection and the other is for the FOH terminals).

I could go on for quite a while about how flexible Vexira is, and how well it worked with all of our Aloha installs, and even workstations in our office. Vexira is not a common name seen on store shelves and they plan on staying that way. They do large businesses, public schools, and ISP's, but will service anyone. Great people and great support.

Desktop lockdown:

We have the BOH boot up and automatically log in as a specific user account. This account is a limited access account, and then to tigten it down further, I use a program called, "Security Administrator", available from
Our users when they click the start menu only have three icons appear. There is no ability to do anything but Aloha functions, our custom apps, and OpenOffice (No way was I going to spend the money for 500+ copies of msOffice).

Another excellent desktop lockdown tool I like even more, and plan on moving to is, Secure Desktop from Visual Automation. This product is awesome! We now use this in our call center, it replaces the windows desktop with an icon bar. Really nice.

Awesome, that is exactly what I was looking for. Going to do some testing with Security Administrator then roll it out. Really like how simply it does what it does!

THANKS!
