I'm trying to find out a way of automatically updateing virus definition files across a NT4 network of about 80-100 workstations, and I haven't got much of a clue but its my job (long story).
They're using NT4 with no service packs, Norton AV and I think they also have Dr. Solomon installed aswell.
I know its possible as it used to happen in my old company in UK, but if you answer please bear in mind that I'm in a developing country and resources are very limited & download speeds would make you all weep.
thanks.

For one, Dr. Solly's is no longer supported by NAI. Also, if you choose to update just the signature files, you may not get the best protection -- which can be achieved by updating both the signature files and engine.

The best way would be to run the updates from a login script. Not too familiar with Dr. Solly so not much help I can give you. Unless you can still get their management console program.

For an LDC, it may be that the most effective solution comes from Frisk Software International,
In terms of updates, tehy come out with them every month or two weeks depending on need, not so often lately as new virus activity has been ramping down.

The update is about a meg per, but...

I'm told that their business accounts ($300 a year, unlimited workstations) have incremental signature upgrades, e.g. just send the differences. This ought to be a few k per week, doable even on 14.4.

Sophos also has individual updates, as particular viruses come out, but I do not know if they group them for an incremental update every month or so.

Howver what you need for poor connects is an A-V package that allows you to just get the changes.

This aspect will have increasing availability as mobile devices have as crappy download speeds as do LDC phone services (grin).
