another stupid question- VCM5 Module

I have an ip office 403DS and have got my hands on a VCM5 module that fits in and registers and appears in monitor as 5 channels. now the stupid question... what is it used for? is it used for VoIP lines (same as ISDN), does it allow VoIP phones to connect to the system? or is it used for VPN connections between offices (VoIP lines)?

Do I need one in order to connect a 4610ip phone on to the unit to then use the ISDN lines for outside calls?

Basically I want to connect an IP phone in my house to the office to use an extension and route calls over the VPN to break out on the ISDN lines. I have a 4610 ip phone and thought that by adding the card and configuring the phone that I could do this, am I right in theory?

VCM channels are used for conversion between TDM and voip

So if you have an ipphone and an isdn line then every call between those two will use a VCM channel

Voicemail does not use a channel

If you use matching codec's then it only uses a VCM channel for the call setup

Iptrunks do use VCM channels if you use digital or analog phones
Ipphones only use a channel with call setup but the codec must match otherwise it uses a channel

This all only applies when direct media path is turned on
If off then a channel is used all the time
