I've read over this several times but something in the material just now jumped out at me. In the section that talks about the Report Processing Model, I am looking at what happens during pass 1. Under the paragraph, Evaluation of Recurring Formulas it says, "Formulas that contain references to subtotals or summary information are processed in pass 2. Then two paragraphs later under Sorting Grouping and Totaling (still pass 1) it says "records are sorted, spearated into groups and then subtotals and summaries are calculated for each group." I'm having difficulty interpreting when subotals and summaries are actually processed. There is no mention of this when reading about what happens during pass 2.

Is the difference here what happens during formula processing versus the grouping process?

Thanks!

Nevermind - I found the clarification a few pages later. The formulas that contain references to subtotals or summary information that are processed in pass 2 are those marked "WhilePrintingRecords".

It need not be formulas that specifically use the WhilePrintingRecords directive. Sorting, grouping, and subtotaling of the groups defined in the report happen during Pass 1. If you create a formula that refers to a group subtotal, it MUST be processed during Pass 2, since the subtotal itself is created during Pass 1. (And the WhilePrintingRecords function is not required since the formula will be evaluated during Pass 2 anyway.)

Subtotals and summaries are NOT "formulas" if that is what is causing your confusion.

I understand - thanks for further clarification!
