Another one of my clients has phoned me up and said that she clicks on IE ( Its IE 6 SP1) and nothing happens. As in the web browser does not open. When i go to task manager i can see IE in as a process but with no CPU time. I have scanned for viruses and also run ad aware and spy bot to no success.

I have tried bcastner's solution in thread608-839214 but to no success.

Can anyone help??

Thanks in advance

Simon

Simon,
I am having the same problems with a user. When I log into the users computer as Administrator, I IE opens normally.
If I go to Window Explorer I can surf the web normally as well.
Are you experiencing the same behavior?

Jamie

Consider a faulty user profile as the issue.

logon as local Administrator and create a new username and password.

Logon as the new username. Does IE now work as it should?

If so:

. Logon as Administrator
. Remove the orignal username
. Copy the original profile data to the new username profile: . You can remove now the original profile. For Win2k or XP use the profile tool: right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced to see the user profile box. Highlight the old profile and delete.

Actually,
What I did was go to Internet Options, advanced, and under "Browsing" I unchecked "Enable third-party browser extension"
and restarted the compter.
That solved the problem, but now things like Google toolbar won't work.

superjet,

You did the write thing: by disabling third-party browser extensions, and then IE worked, you showed that a BHO - Browser Helper Object is to blame.

faq608-4650 details the steps required to do a thorough clean of your system.

In the alternative, ToolbarCop should let you identify and remove an unwanted BHO:
After your system is clean, re-enable third-party extensions and enjoy Google toolbar again.

Thanks for the help guys but unfortuately taking off enable 3rd party browser extensions did not work

Any other ideas would be great

Also Bcastner where did you learn all these internet solutions because you have helped me many times my thanks for this by the way

regards

Simon

Any other ideas would be great

Use any other browser besides IE! (Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, Opera.....)

There's always a better way. The fun is trying to find it!

Thanks for the post tviman but the probelm is the company policy for this firm is IE. Don't ask me why it goes back long before we took the contract

Smorgan11,

I steal them from carr, manarth, marcs41 and others!

Have you tried a repair reinstall of IE? I am a little concerned that this appears not the first machine where this problem is happening. This suggests a trogan of some type.

Before repairing IE I would like you to:

. Do an online AV scan from Trend Micro and Panda:
. Download and apply:
. Use Doug Knox's site, and download and use his file association repairs for .exe, .ico and .lnk files:

Reboot and test. If no joy, do the repair reinstallation of IE.
